Arsenal Transfers: 5 Alternatives To £10m Victor Valdes

2. Asmir Begovi‡€“ Stoke City

Begovic

The arrival of England u21 prodigy Jack Butland in the summer suggests that Stoke may be planning to cash in on their current number one. At 6"5 and 13 Stone, Begovic is a physically imposing and aerially dominant 'keeper, whose size belies his agility and handling skills. The Canadian Bosnia international has developed to meet the potential evident from his early displays at Portsmouth, and is now one of the most consistent keepers in the Premier League. At 25 he still has room for improvement, particularly given his career trajectory, though his age does again call Szczesny's future into question, as well as increasing his sale value. However, he does seem more reliable and technically sound than Arsenal's number one, if not quite as lively a personality. He also has the advantage as counting as 'home grown' for squad registration purposes. Noises in the press suggest that Manchester United are the most likely destination, but much depends on De Gea's form for the rest of the season, which seems to be improving in recent weeks. One thing that may be a sticking point, regardless of competing interest, is the poor relationship between Arsenal and Stoke City, from supporters and players to the Managers and on Stoke's part, the board. Stoke's resolve in resisting bids from big clubs hasn't really been tested, but it is hard to imagine Tony Pulis and Arsene Wenger having a friendly chat regarding a potential transfer.
