Arsenal Transfers: 5 Alternatives To £10m Victor Valdes

1.Maarten Stekelenburg €“ AS Roma

Stekelenburg Having lost his place at club and now International level, the former Ajax goalkeeper is desperate to leave the Italian capital. At the very end of the transfer window, his proposed loan move to be reunited with former boss Martin Jol at Fulham fell through at the last minute. Roma failed to agree terms with Fiorentina's Emiliano Viviano, and pulled the plug on the deal while Stekelenburg was somewhere over France in a private Jet, leaving the Dutchman literally up in the air. At 6"5 and 13 stone, he is a physical match for Begovic, but has the advantage of over twice as many top flight games (224) and 54 caps for Holland. Twice voted Ajax player of the year, he was excellent during his nation's march to the 2010 World Cup Final, and it has only really been injuries and a slight struggle to adjust to Italian football that has de-railed his steady rise. Still only 30, but out of favour, he could provide an excellent cut-price option, given Roma's apparent desire to bring in an Italian keeper. He has the experience of being both first choice and back-up for successful domestic and national teams, but also has something to prove in terms of his battle with Tim Krul for the national team's number one jersey. His upside is not as great as Krul, Begovic or Ter-Stegen, but he also presents less of a risk, and would be competition rather than a replacement for Szczesny. Equally his wages are far from astronomical. The question really is, whether Arsenal want an experienced pro to keep the current incumbent on his toes, or if they want to go in another direction as long-term first choice. Do you think Arsenal need to replace Szczesny? Who would you sign? Share your thoughts below.
