4. RVP Situation
Another aspect in which signing Ibrahim Afellay could prove a smart move for Arsenal is the RVP situation. As Im sure you all know, Arsenals captain Robin van Persie has released a statement saying he has no intention of signing a contract extension with the club. The primary reason he cites is that he disagrees with the direction the club is heading; we can infer that he means to say that Arsenal arent being ambitious enough and wont challenge for trophies. Enter Ibrahim Afellay. Afellay has a close personal friendship with van Persie off the field, as well as a near-telepathic understanding with the striker on the pitch. Signing him could be just the kind of move that may convince RVP that the Gunners are headed in the right direction, possibly convincing him to stay. Van Persie would likely be tempted by the opportunity to play with a close friend (and a world class player in his own right); meaning that Arsenal would be shelling out £6 million on a terrific player and a makeweight in negotiations with the current captain, bargain right?
