Chelsea Transfers: 10 Players Who Could Be Sold By Jose Mourinho This Summer

7. David Luiz

If there's one thing Jose Mourinho values above all else, it's stability. He likes his sides to be made of rock, near impossible for any opponent to break down without exerting huge amounts of effort and probably conceding a handful to well-timed counter-attacks. In defence, his players must be attentive, safety-conscious and positionally flawless. In other words, everything David Luiz is not. In his favour, Luiz is a favourite among Chelsea fans for his ridiculous hair, the evident joy he derives from playing football and a very silly sense of humour in interviews. His pace, energy and solid range of passing give him a good spread of abilities which few other players in the squad can match, yet he lets himself down again and again by a reckless lack of discipline. His cavalier approach to defending has seen him pushed forward into midfield by his two previous managers, even though Mourinho suggested at the start of the season that he intended to help the Brazilian develop his skills in his original position. Luiz has had some fantastic performances in the middle of the park as well, where his tendency to lead with his heart rather than his head at least gives him time to track back and redeem any mistakes. His partnership with Nemanja Matic has been instrumental in hugely important win against Manchester City and Arsenal, but he remains something of an enigma who has never looked liked recapturing his form at the end of last season when he almost single-handedly drove the club to European success and Champions League qualification. If Mourinho believes Luiz can continue to offer something no-one else can in midfield, the Brazilian has a good chance of staying. Yet with Barcelona ready to make a bid in their search for a ball-playing defender, the manager may be tempted to cut his losses on a player who has been exhilarating and agonising in equal measure.
