England 1 Poland 1 - 1973
"The Polish keeper is a clown" has gone down in the folklore of footballing punditry as Brian Clough in his usual non-committal style shared his views on the Polish football team prior to this win or die World Cup qualifier between the hosts and the Poles at Wembley. Needing a win the home side peppered the Polish defence but were thwarted constantly by Jan Tomaszewski (the aforementioned clown) who pulled off save after stunning save. Pushing for a goal England left themselves stretched at the back and following a missed tackle by Norman Hunter and a mistake by Peter Shilton, Poland amazingly went ahead. A late equaliser from the penalty spot was never going to be enough and England were out. Alf Ramsey was also out of the job that had made his name seven years previously.
