England's 10 Most Devastating World Cup Exits

10. Germany - 2010

Was it a goal, was it not a goal? Yes, clearly, by about a yard! Frank Lampard€™s strike would have squared the game up at 2-2, with the momentum being very much with England. Would we have won the game, who knows? Germany were clearly playing the more attractive football on the day. Regardless, a decision so costly in a game of such magnitude is almost criminal. Shame on you Jorge Larrionda and your team of useless officials. Controversial decision aside, we were simply outclassed by a technically gifted, fast paced German side. The final result of 4-1 would prove to be England€™s heaviest defeat at a World Cup tournament and saw us on a plane home before the quarter finals. In many ways the poor decision previously mentioned was convenient camouflage diverting attention away from an abysmal showing by an England team ostensibly short of any pride whatsoever. England€™s 2010 World Cup exit was seemingly the end of the overly-hyped, underachieving €˜golden generation€™. I am still not entirely sure as to why that particular set of players inherited such a nickname. The Three Lions bottled every major tournament and didn€™t progress beyond the quarter finals under the guidance of the €˜golden generation€™ - the likes of Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Frank Lampard.
