Unlike many of the managers on this list who had a lengthy playing career but just never managed to reach the heights they would later enjoy as a gaffer, Brendan Rodgers would never get to realise his footballing potential due to a genetic condition in his knee.

Despite being forced to retire from the professional game aged just 20, Rogers had previously turned out for both Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland's schoolboy teams, with contemporary reports prior to his injury full of praise for the young Rodgers' playing acumen.

Though he assumes a low spot on this list, it is difficult to definitively say just how good the current Leicester boss could have been if he had managed to remain injury-free.
