In 1962, Brazil became the second team after Italy to defend a World Cup title, something which hasn’t been done since.

An undeniably troubled World Cup, the tournament was tinged with a toxic atmosphere and rampant on pitch violent, a malicious cocktail that culminated in the ‘Battle of Santiago’ between Chile and Italy. Additionally, Pelé was injured in the second match, an absence that seemed to have spelled the end for the Seleção.

However, the emergence of Amarildo and the unquestionably underrated star Garrincha inspired a talented Brazil side through a difficult tournament to become champions after defeating the organised Czechoslovakians.

To lose Pelé and still go on to win the World Cup proves the depth and ability of the 1962 side.
