There may be no ‘I’ in team, but Argentina will be forever thankful that there was a Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup squad.

Whilst it is unfair to say Maradona was a one man team, with Burruchago and Valdano very capable and talented players, Maradona’s 5 goals and 5 assists are simply footnotes to perhaps the most impressive all round, individual performance at a major international tournament.

Maradona captured the imaginations of fans from every nation and shattered understandings of what was possible on a football pitch. His performance against England perfectly encapsulated his sublime talent. His unrivalled ability and close control was evidenced by his ‘Goal of the Century’, and his bite and will to win signified in the iconic image of his ‘Hand of God’ goal.

This Argentina side had the intelligence and guile to service Maradona and provide the framework for him to make the tournament his own… and Argentina’s.
