Sure, he'd be a gamble as big as he is at Everton (though they have the added bonus of him not costing a great deal), and relying on him alone to replace Lukaku's goals might be a bit of a fantasy, but romance might well be on Wayne Rooney's side.

Rooney has a lot to prove: he's dropped out of the England picture, he's stopped scoring with the frequency he once did and playing deeper has not done a great deal for his reputation. If he can recapture even a fracture of the form that took him away from Everton in the first place - and he'll have the crowd behind him to help him achieve it - he'll be a snip at £7.5m.

There's no way he'll be playing in midfield, even with Ross Barkley leaving, and without Lukaku, Everton will need to get him back in the goals. First step would be getting him in the right area, and with a striker like Rooney, the class is permanent enough to mean the goals will follow.
