3. What He Said
Skip forward. It's 2010 and rumours abounded of unrest, Rafa is fired, Alonso and Macherano are both gone, but we cheered as we watched Torres lift the World Cup with Spain, then we see the picture of Torres with a Liverpool scarf wrapped around him and the cup in hand. It's okay everybody, Fernando still bleeds Red. But then January 2011 sees the hero of Anfield depart for none other than Chelsea and suddenly the world got darker. As if to compound matters, Torres states in interview that Liverpool couldn't match his ambition, later going on to say that there were things that the fans couldn't know. Confusion mixed itself with our sense of betrayal, anger and hurt. 4. Torres Gets The Blues Something seemed to break in Torres after his
£50 million pound transfer, whether it was the weight of expectation, the wrong formation or Didier Drogbas refusal to step aside and die, or all of the above we can never truly know. Chelsea fans gave themselves heart and soul to Torres, but somehow could never pull the diminishing Spaniard from his slump. Too many games passed without a goal, Fernando slumped physically and was dropped to the bench, further compounding his misery. None would say he never had the chance, but he never seized it in the way that is expected of a man who commanded two huge transfers in his career.
