4. Doping
The recent confession of Lance Armstrong has led many to question whether or not the worlds favourite sport also suffers from a doping dilemma. Eufemiano Fuentes, a Spanish doctor implicated in a cycling doping scandal, may have also given performance enhancing drugs to footballers, and he has intimated that Spain used such drugs to help win the World Cup in 2010. While such allegations are to be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise, the sport has been rife with rumors and even evidence of doping in the past, so no doubt some doubt will stick. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has spoken of the unusually high red blood cell count in players he had signed from other European clubs, something which is typically a symptom of EPO or erythropoietin, a performance enhancer. More infamously a Juventus club doctor was found guilty of doping players during the clubs highly successful period in the 1990s, though Dr. Riccardo Agricola was not removed from his post nor were any Juve players punished. I encourage those that read this article to research this issue some more as these cases are very much only the tip of the iceberg.
