After the heartbreak of the final in 2008, Frank Lampard and Chelsea were determined to once and for all win the Champions League and give Roman Abramovich his one major desire at Chelsea. Somehow Chelsea managed to navigate a route to the final, beating Napoli (just), Benfica and Barcelona (after a memorable night at the Nou Camp), and then thanks to John Terrys red card against Barcelona, Lampard was handed the captains armband for one of the most crucial matches of his career. In the match, Chelsea went on to resist an onslaught of Bayern Munich attacks, with Lampard and Mikel both providing protection for the defence, though with 10 minutes to go a Thomas Muller goal looked to have won the match for the Germans. But then, Chelsea had Drogba to thank as he scored a superb header to send the game to extra time. Chelsea withstood further waves of Bayern attacks and a Petr Cech save from Arjen Robbens penalty meant the game was headed for a penalty shoot-out. Juan Mata missed Chelseas first penalty, but thanks to misses from Olic and crucially from Schweinsteiger, Chelsea were Champions of Europe.
