Liverpool: 10 Highly-Rated Talents Who Threw It All Away

7. Mark Gonzalez

In 2007, Gonzalez arrived at Liverpool with one major selling point, on which his reputation had been built - speed. His extremely fitting surname matched the Looney Tunes character, as the Chilean was blessed with extreme pace. Although he displayed this on occasions, they came few and far between: he had one superb game against Manchester United once when menacing Gary Neville for 60 minutes of the game, with his blistering pace, however that is the only positive memory most fans would even have of him. He looked afraid to get involved within the physical side of the game and shied away from tackles all too often. The Chilean had a real chance at Anfield to become an elite player, yet his inability to become accustomed to the English style saw him throw his big chance away and settle for a football career of mediocrity. For all of the potential that was hyped around him before his move to Liverpool, it was disappointing. The left-wing was a position wide open for the taking yet Gonzalez didn't make his mark on the position.
