5. The Aging Talisman
Steven Gerrard is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in Liverpool history: he has been at their core, driving them on, for over a decade now, with unparalleled consistency. This season has largely been the same: he is Liverpool's only ever present player in the Premiership and has been praised for his form, winning England player of the year for a second time. At 32, though, it is only natural that a player with the box-to-box ethos of Gerrard would begin to require more support from his team mates. Looking closely at Gerrard's performances this season, you may have noticed his trademark bullet passes have began to (very) occasionally go astray, and the desire to sprint back has faded to more of an intent jog. The declines of other notable aging players in the league, players like Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Frank Lampard are less obvious because of the incredible talents around them, helping them to get the best out of themselves at the right moment. Unfortunately for Gerrard, the players around him aren't of the quality of Manchester United or Chelsea, and where in seasons gone by Gerrard could drive Liverpool on single handed, it isn't really feasible to expect it of him now.
