1. Clint Dempsey (Fulham)
One of the hottest properties of this summer, the fact that Dempsey has not yet sealed a move away from Fulham after another exceptional season at Craven Cottage is one of the most baffling non-developments of the summer so far. He certainly won't have a lack of admirers after scoring an impressive 23 goals from 46 appearances from a deep-lying attacking position, but his age (29) will make him a more affordable option than other attackers with less impressive statistics. Dempsey is almost certainly a better option than Victor Moses at this stage, because he would offer a more immediate threat of goals than the younger, wider-minded Wigan attacker, even if Moses would seem a more intelligent investment in the long-term. Dempsey has appreciated with age, adapting to life in the Premier League with increasing impact, culminating in an exceptional performance in the London club's eye-catching 5-2 defeat of Newcastle last year. If Liverpool could take advantage of performances like that one on a regular basis for two or three years, the £6m or so needed to prize him away from Fulham would look a snip.
