At the start of 2013/14, nobody gave Liverpool the remotest chance of challenging for the Premier League title. In fact, following their seventh-place finish in 2012/13, not many felt they would get close to a top-four finish either. What followed was a sensational campaign by Rodgers' side, and their best ever Premier League season. Luis Suarez had decided to stay at the club, having nearly left in the summer, while recent signings Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, who joined in January 2013, were getting better and better. In truth, the signings made that summer, including Simon Mignolet and Kolo Toure, failed to set the world alight. Jamie Carragher retired, having spent 17 years at the club. The Reds won their first three league games 1-0, against Stoke City, Villa and United, but those low-scoring games were not to become the norm in games involving them throughout the season. Until early December, Liverpool were going well but losing and drawing the odd sloppy match here and there. Suddenly they went up a huge gear, however, producing some sensational performances. Suarez, who had been a joy to watch since returning from suspension in September, simply got better and better, and his relationship with Sturridge in attack was unbelievable. Raheem Sterling suddenly sprang into life, becoming the most exciting young player in the country, Jordan Henderson continued to prove his doubters wrong and Gerrard was influential in a new deep-lying playmaker role. The football Liverpool were playing was the most entertaining seen in many years at Anfield, and they started blowing teams away. Having narrowly lost to Chelsea and Manchester City during the Christmas period, they went on a 16-game unbeaten run, winning 11 on the spin at one point. Rodgers' men suddenly became title favourites from nowhere, thumping Arsenal 5-1, Spurs and Everton 4-0 and winning 3-0 at United. Nobody could deal with Suarez and co. They fell agonisingly short in the end, losing to Chelsea at Anfield with three games remaining and gifting the title to City, but it had been an unbelievable run of form. Let's hope we see more of the same from this point onwards.
