Man Utd: 5 Reasons Why Shinji Kagawa Can Be David Moyes' Star Man

2. By Giving Robin van Persie A Reduced Role

I realise this point is highly controversial seeing as Van Persie was last season's top scorer in the Premier League with ten goals, but if United are to evolve over the next few seasons they have to realise that the Dutchman will not be a part of it for very long. The Holland international was bought by Ferguson in his final season at Old Trafford in a bid to secure the 20th league title, thus overtaking bitter rivals Liverpool in the number of league titles won, and Van Persie was the perfect man to score the goals that were lacking in the 2011/12 season. Van Persie was never a long term solution and was already 29 at the time of his transfer to United. Whilst he is not yet past it, it will come in the next year or so, and as a player who has struggled throughout his career with injury, Van Persie must be living on borrowed time at United over the next two years or so. Kagawa on the other hand was bought very much with a view to the future style of the team, and his development at the club was completely scuppered by Ferguson's want for another league title. Before Van Persie arrived, Kagawa was being groomed as the No.10, but with the Dutchman's arrival he was pushed out to the wing as a result of Rooney's positioning in a deeper role. One of the only ways Kagawa can succeed at United is if he plays with the right players, and having Rooney ahead him would work better than Van Persie playing as the lone striker, and with the latter entering the final stages of his career, the change must be made sooner rather than later.
