Man Utd: Ranking Premier League Goalkeepers From Worst To Best

6. Roy Carroll

Singed by Manchester United in 2001, Roy Carroll had varying levels of success but ultimately found himself playing second fiddle to No.1 Fabien Barthez. Carroll made 49 appearances for United after arriving from Wigan in 2001 but his stay at the Theatre of Dreams was largely marred by a series of gaffes. One of these came against Tottenham Hotspur in 2007 when Pedro Mendes scored the 'goal that wasn't a goal' - Carroll clawing the ball back after it had crossed the line. Though the referee failed to spot this incident, it wasn't unnoticed by Sir Alex Ferguson, who dropped the blunder keeper thereafter. Carroll contended with Barthez and the battle for the No.1 jersey only intensified even after the Frenchman's departure when United signed Tim Howard. The keeper was released from his contract in 2005 after refusing to sign a new deal when United failed to give him assurances over his first-team place. The Northern Irishman moved on to West Ham and is today plying his trade for Greek side Olympiacos.
