Man Utd Transfers: 10 Dream Ways Van Gaal Should Spend His Unlimited Budget

9. Jan Vertonghen

While United are in desperate need of fresh quality on the flanks, they are in similar need of a new centre-back or two. Rio Ferdinand was allowed to leave this summer after his contract expired while Nemanja Vidic left for Inter Milan, leaving a gaping chasm at the heart of the Red Devil's defence. The likes of Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling cannot be trusted to hold the two vacant centre-back positions at present, meaning Louis van Gaal is going to have to dip into the transfer market and bring in some reinforcements. A number of names have already been put forward to fill one of the two vacant centre-half positions at Old Trafford next season, such as Thomas Vermaelen and Mats Hummels. However, the best option at United's disposal is Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian international is already established in the Premier League and has been one of the topflight's best centre-backs over the past few years, while at 26 he has the potential to be even better. United need a ready-made replacement for Vidic and Vertonghen could be exactly that. Spurs would no doubt be reluctant to sell, while there is bad blood between United and the Londoners ever since the Dimitar Berbatov sale. That being said, a monster bid from the Red Devils may give Tottenham food for thought, and van Gaal clearly has the money at his disposal to do just that.
