1. Cuneyt Cakir, Take A Bow
In the 55th minute, the Turkish referee, who also sent off John Terry last year in the semi-final second leg at the Nou Camp, ruined the biggest game of the year. I have so far only heard of two people who felt that he had made the right decision, the first being himself and the second being ITV's Roy Keane, who voiced his bizarre opinions, which left Andy Townsend, Gareth Southgate and Adrian Chiles baffled. Even the Real Madrid players didn't feel a red card was coming- for once, none of the players were surrounding the referee waving imaginary cards and Alvaro Arbeloa, the victim of Nani's challenge, was up quickly and talking to the United players. Simply, you cannot disagree that Nani connected with Arbeloa, but everybody, apart from Cakir, could see that Nani had his eyes fixed on the ball coming over his shoulder and was watching it onto his boot. He did not extend his leg in a manner which indicated a desire to cause injury, and it left no serious damage to Arbeloa, who went on to play the remaining thirty five minutes for the Spaniards. The decision simply ruined the match and left many of Manchester United's players and staff incensed, as everybody could see Rio Ferdinand sarcastically applauding the referee after the final whistle and Sir Alex Ferguson apparently being left too distraught to fulfill his media obligations. The match was killed as a spectacle on the 55th minute, and I wonder if Fergie's dream to win another Champions' League title has been killed for good. Well done, Mr Cakir. Well done.
