Mark Hughes holds the distinction for having had two successful runs in a United shirt. The first of these came in the pre-Premier League era, between 1980 and 1986, where 'Sparky' excelled under Sir Alex Ferguson's predecessor, Ron Atkinson, before moving to Barcelona.

Eventually, he came back to Manchester via Bayern Munch in 1988, quickly re-establishing himself as the team's primary threat in front of goal. The dawn of the Premier League saw him develop a lethal partnership with Eric Cantona that led the team to victory in the first two campaigns, before an unexpected transfer saw him move to Chelsea at the age of thirty one at the end of the third.
