Sir Alex Ferguson actively sought out the services of Blackburn striker Alan Shearer following the 1995/96 season, but following Shearer's decision to join Newcastle he instead spent £1 million on an unknown Norwegian - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - who would become the bargain of the century.

Ole won the hearts and minds of the club's fans throughout his often injury-plagued eleven year tenure by willingly taking a backseat role when required. Though he went through periods as a starter, he was more frequently utilised as a 'super-sub', coming off of the bench to score late goals, most notably in the 1998/99 Champions League final, where he put the ball in the back of the net to win the game shortly after Teddy Sheringham had equalised proceedings with thirty seconds of added time played.
