Newcastle 0-3 Sunderland: 5 Lessons Learned From One Sided Derby

2. Newcastle Really Miss Fabricio Coloccini

Perhaps it was more to do with just how re-invigorated Sunderland are under Poyet, but whenever the Black Cats pored forward, they always looked like scoring. Yet it takes two to tango, and a good attack always needs a poor defence to look dangerous. And Newcastle's defence was poor €“ caught out by inventive passing from Altidore and Johnson, the back twosome of Steven Taylor and Mike Williamson looked beleaguered throughout and simply weren't authoritative when they needed to be. This all points to one thing €“ Fabricio Coloccini needs to come back, and quickly. The Argentine captain will be out for another three weeks after suffering a knee injury at Newcastle's New Year fixture against West Brom, and frankly, it couldn't have been at a worse time. With Newcastle's attacking threat looking no way near as potent with the loss of Yohan Cabaye, the onus will be on the defence like never before. You can survive a misfiring attack, but a shaky backline will lose you points every time, and with their best defender stuck in the treatment room the problem will persist.
