NFL: 5 Players Who Could Have A Sophomore Slump

3. Jonathan Martin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=016yOC8P3wo Jonathon Martin is a decent football player for the Miami Dolphins. He was selected in the second round and started all 16 games for the Dolphins at both right and left tackle. Martin was extremely inconsistent in his rookie year though. He showed some flashes of potential; however he seemed to get torched a lot of times. It was mainly right tackle that Martin didn't do so well since his natural position is at left tackle since he played that in college. When Jake Long got injured last season the Dolphins decided to move Martin over to left tackle and it seemed like he was more comfortable there. He did little better at the left tackle position than he did at the right tackle position. This is a season where Martin needs to step up his game. He is going to go up against some stiff competition this year in Mario Williams, Chandler Jones, Michael Johnson, Shaun Phillips, and Lamar Woodley. This is a lot pressure for the second year man out of Stanford to handle and that is why I think he will have a sophomore slump in 2013. Ryan Tannehill's blindside depends on Martin and it is going to have to take a lot of getting used to. When coming into the league I thought Martin would be a great fit at right tackle, but the fact that he couldn't handle right tackle makes me believe that he won't be able to hand left tackle. He€™ll be going up against bigger, stronger, faster pass rushers and I think he'll have a hard time adjusting to it. If Martin can't handle the left tackle spot he may have to kick inside to save his career with the Dolphin. I always like Martin as a player so hopefully he can prove me wrong and develop into a quality left tackle, if not, then maybe the Dolphins would have been better off selecting Lane Johnson with the third overall pick instead of Dion Jordan.
