Roberto Baggio At 50: 10 Perfect Goals

6. FIORENTINA Vs. Lazio (Serie A, 1988/89)

The young Roby was already popular amongst the Viola faithful after his move from Vicenza to Fiorentina in 1985, but by 1988, it was becoming clear that Baggio wasn't just a good player, but destined to be one of the finest of his generation.

Such was Baggio's rise to prominence during his prolific 1988/89 season that he drew comparison's to the league's other great number 10, Napoli's almost mythical Diego Maradona. It wasn't just the quantity of Baggio's goals which arrested attention, but their magnificence.

The preternatural talent of a pre-ponytailed Baggio was again in evidence when the Gigliati trounced Lazio in Florence, Roby delicately curling Dunga's tee-up into the top corner for his seventh goal of the season. It was a goal Diego himself would have been proud of.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
