Spurs Fans' 10 Most Hated Players Of The Modern Era

2. Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale left Spurs for Real Madrid - where he hooked up with the aforementioned Luka Modric - in an extremely high-profile move that saw him become the most expensive footballer in history. Real coughed up £85.3 million for the Welshman in a move that disappointed Spurs fans - who had been told that he would be staying - not least because of the manner of the the transfer. Like Modric before him, Bale effectively went on strike to force the move, refusing to turn up at training to make a point that he wanted to head to Spain - and it worked. In Bale's case, this was a particular shame for Spurs fans, as he was the one true superstar that Spurs have had in their ranks this side of the millennium. Spurs turned him from a kid with potential to a world class talent and he became idolised for his exceptional performances - performances which single-handedly earned Spurs points on occasions (to the extent that some fans started calling the White Hart Lane club a one-man team). Bale's time at Spurs is remembered fondly, but his relationship with the club's fans has undoubtedly been soured.
