Spurs Transfers: 5 Quick Defensive Fixes Tim Sherwood Should Consider In January
3. Fabio Coentrao
Spurs were in an ideal position to get a good player as part of the Gareth Bale deal when Real Madrid came knocking, so to have come away with "only" money from it is actually quite disappointing (obviously it was a huge amount of money, but still...). Fabio Coentrao, in my humble opinion, would have been the missing piece in the Spurs jigsaw. He would, quite simply, have completed the team, ensuring every position on the pitch was filled with a player capable of challenging at the top - and I genuinely think Spurs would have been a much stronger unit for the entirety of this season had he been on board. Of course, it may have been the case that Coentrao flat-out refused to speak to Spurs but, now that we're in to 2014 and he still isn't guaranteed a first team place at the Bernabeu, he might want to reconsider. Not that he wouldn't be a sure-fire starter for Portugal in Brazil anyway, but he must surely want to keep his match-fitness at its highest possible levels in the build-up to the World Cup). He'd be guaranteed a first team place at White Hart Lane and, if Tim Sherwood decides to renew Tottenham's interest in the player, he should snap their hands off to take up their offer of a loan spell at the club. Having a left back of Coentrao's quality in Spurs' team would vastly improve them overall and it would be a mutually beneficial deal until the end of the season.
