9. Fabio Borini - Liverpool

A controversial choice, no doubt, but Borini was one of the most important players for Sunderland during his season-long loan from Liverpool. The pacy Italian scored crucial goals in both the League Cup run and relegation dogfight of 2013/14, endearing himself to fans with his determination and finisher's instinct. Unfortunately, Borini's reputation on Wearside took a hit when he refused a permanent move to the Stadium of Light (after a very drawn-out negotiation period), a decision which proved to be unwise as he saw most of this season's action from the bench.
