Through his illustrious United connections Roy Keane pulled the strings to bring the young Evans to Wearside on loan from January to May, 2007. Surprisingly, alongside Nosworthy a right back moved inside Evans flourished; a partnership was born and a firm foundation for Sunderlands eventual promotion was cemented. The quiet Evans easily scooped up danger and wasnt afraid to venture forward to distribute the ball. In Sunderlands back line he had presence, was assured and calm. He looked like a Manchester United player in the making, or if Sunderland were lucky enough to pursue him, a modern day Charlie Hurley, perhaps? Clearly come the summer it wasnt to be, Roy Keanes influence at Manchester United could only stretch so far. Despite rumoured bids for the young centre back Sir Alex wasnt budging. He had seen Evans at his best, although still raw, he touted him as the future. Appearances followed in a Red Devils' jersey, but not quite living up to Sir Alexs earlier praise. A non-footballing incident would occur regarding Evans allowing Keane to bring him back to Sunderland for a second time. Just as before, Evans shone alongside cult-hero Nosworthy. Although in the tougher surroundings of the Premiership now, Sunderland would grind out results amassing enough points to retain their Premier League status for a second year. Evans for the foreseeable would remain on Sunderlands radar, hed proven himself at the top level. Although proving it at Manchester United was something else entirely.
