UFC 195 Results: 7 Things We Learned From Lawler Vs Condit
2. The Main Event Was Closer Than People Realize
There's a massive outcry online from fans who are declaring the result of the welterweight title fight a robbery. While Robbie Lawler retaining the title was a surprising result - and I myself scored the fight in favor of Carlos Condit - it wasn't the thievery that many are making it out to be. Everyone is pointing to the metrics and the difference in the volume of the strikes, and while that difference is stark - 198 strikes to 78 in favor of Condit - they don't tell the entire story. The first two rounds were split with Condit taking the first and Lawler the second, and then the challenger took four while the champ got the final frame. The toss up round was the third, and it could have easily gone either way. Two judges awarded the deciding round to Lawler, netting him the split decision victory. The fans, media and fight community were all in shock at the announcement, but while it's easy to see that sentiment people need to stop acting like this is a criminal act. Condit's volume of strikes was impressive, but Lawler landed the more effective blows and successfully parried many of "The Natural Born Killer's" kicks, knees, elbows and punches. If you agree that the other four rounds were scored properly, then based on the 10-point must system you have to isolate the third frame and view it on its own. It was the closest of the bout and an argument can be made for giving it to either man. Regardless of how you saw it, I think we can all agree we need a rematch between these two barbarians as soon as possible.
