Vince McMahon's XFL Suspends Play For 2020 Season
Another major sports league shuts down.
Vince McMahon's XFL has announced that play has been suspended on its ongoing 2020 season thanks to the ongoing situation with the coronavirus.
The league issued the following statement on Thursday evening:-
"Currently, the XFL will not be playing its regular-season games. However, all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the 2020 regular season. All XFL ticket holders will be issued refunds or credit toward future games. The XFL is committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years."
The wording here is curious and suggests that the season may have been scrapped outright, though the opening sentence leaves the possibility of reconvening once the crisis has eased open. Still, it's good to hear that the XFL will be paying full salaries to their players and offering refunds to out-of-pocket fans.
In suspending play, the XFL joins the NBA, the NHL, a host of European football leagues and many, many others. The English Premier League was set to go ahead at the time of writing though an emergency meeting has been called for 10:30am today. The MLB, meanwhile, has announced a delay to its opening day.
