4. Fighting Spirit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR8KbZDIapM On paper, the Wigan side is not the greatest and this reflects the lack of money invested in new players each season. But one thing the side never lack is fighting spirit. Faced with an up-hill task season after season, The Latics are known as a side that stick together through thick and thin, somehow making it through the dark patches to fight another day - with the exception of this season, albeit they still managed to stay competitive throughout with a draw against Tottenham and narrow loss to Manchester City in recent weeks. A characteristic that is vital in modern football is building a firm foundation and expanding on it, and Martinez has managed to do so at Wigan. With a healthy mixture of old and young at the club, this allows the older players such as Mike Pollitt, Paul Scharner and Emmerson Boyce to mentor up-and-comers such as Joel Robles, Callum McManaman and the sought-after James McCarthy. It also makes the transition to English football a lot easier for newcomers from foreign leagues, Wigan consistently bring in a solid number of players that avoids the possibility of lack of chemistry within the side that has seen problems for the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid in the past. If Wigan can keep some of their key players from this season and keep up their tradition of loaning youngsters from Europe's top clubs, they should do well in the Championship. Their fighting spirit should remain even if Martinez does leave the club and this could be key to their hopes of bouncing back up to the Premiership next season.
