Wimbledon 2014: 8 Contenders Who Could Win It

7. Milos Raonic

Wimbledon Track Record: Milos Raonic has struggled to take to the lawns of Wimbledon, having never progressed beyond the 2nd round. Grass Court Game: Raonic is one of a few players who has the arsenal of aggressive shots to power his way through multiple matches on grass. Similar to Wawrinka, it would seem that movement on the surface is an issue for the Canadian number one. While his hefty serve will no doubt reward him with many aces on the low bouncing lawns of SW19, the fact that he is long legged and will naturally struggle to get down low with the ball means that more agile opponents can successfully out manoeuvre him and connect with a subsequent counter attack. Raonic has the weapons to dominate on a grass court, but perhaps lacks the experience and confidence to successfully do so. Current Form: Raonic is a relatively young buck on the ATP tour and in 2014 has steadily improved his game which is reflected in his career high ranking of number nine in the world. He has routinely made the quarterfinals of a number of the important Masters 1000 level tournaments and has recently made his very first grandslam quarterfinal at the French Open. In short Raonic in 2014 has played himself into form and heads into Wimbledon with the confidence and momentum gained from winning matches against a variety of top ranked players. As so often is the case in any sport, confidence is vital for success which perhaps signals the potential for Raonic to construct a decent Wimbledon showing in 2014. Wimbledon '14 Prediction: 4th Round If Raonic can survive the early rounds he should gain vital grass court experience that would serve to consolidate the undoubted confidence that he has pieced together over the year thus far. While he has the big serve that can take his opponents racket out of their hands, he equally has a tendency to move awkwardly on a grass court which will no doubt be exploited by more seasoned grass court players. Overall a 4th round showing is likely to be the last stand of Raonic at Wimbledon this year, but give or take an upset or two he certainly has the talent to progress on and win the tournament out right.
