World Cup 2014: 25 Most Memorable Moments
21. Di Maria Winner Vs Switzerland
There are many goals that could have been chosen for this list for their sublime display of skill, breath-taking technique and pure brilliance, but this goal isnt present for those reasons. Yes, Di Marias extra winner against the Swiss was a good finish and a rare moment of quality in what was an otherwise pretty dour game, but this goal will be remembered due to the total disaster that was Di Marias performance.
The Argentinian only had 4 successful crosses out of 19, a measly 3 of his shots were on target out of 12, in the first 70 minutes he lost possession 28 times and his failed rabona will live long in the memory. But despite it all, he managed to score an incredibly important goal for the defeated finalists.
20. David Villa's Tears
Spains World Cup campaign was such a disaster that it is no surprise that a few tears were shed around the country. The most highly-visible ones came from Spains striker David Villa, who capped his final appearance for his country with a cheeky back heel that started the scoring in what was an insignificant 3-0 victory over Australia. Villa was substituted just before the hour mark for Juan Mata and the tears began to flow. This raw display of emotion showed the pride he had representing his country.
This was a sad and downbeat end to what had been a great international career,he became Spains leading scorer, won 2 European Championships and 1 World Cup.
