World Cup 2018: 8 Pieces Of History That Were Made

5. The Real Golden Boot Winner

With six goals coming in the 2018 World Cup, Harry Kane deservedly took home the Golden Boot trophy, becoming the first Englishman to do so since Gary Lineker in Mexico 1986.

However, in the official goalscoring charts, Kane's name will be second behind 'Own Goal'. Before the 2018 World Cup, the record for own goals in a single tournament was five, coming in France 1998.

This tally was more than doubled in Russia, with 12 players putting the ball in their own net. Denis Cheryshev and Mario Mandzukic were the only players to score at both the right and wrong ends over the course of the tournament, with Mandzukic's own goal coming at the worst possible time, putting Croatia 1-0 down in the final against France.
