20 Things You Somehow Missed In Andor
5. Kino Loy's Backstory Was Inspired By Two Hollywood Classics
Another instantly memorable character from the modern era of Star Wars, Kino Loy's brief stint in Andor's Narkina-5 arc was captivating, thought-provoking and heart-wrenching in equal measure. This was in due to no small part from a brilliant character arc and Andy Serkis' career-best performance (at least outside the realm of performance capture).
In interviews with Vanity Fair and Star Wars.com, the actor mentioned he saw Loy as a passionate shopkeeper and union leader who was wrongly imprisoned by the Empire. The tyrannical regime saw his ability to mobilize people and used it to keep order in the prison.
During the creative process, Serkis drew inspiration from monumental features such as Cool Hand Luke and The Shawshank Redemption. The Lord of the Rings actor went on to state that somewhere along the way Loy lost his empathy for others and became a hardened shell whose only goal was to finish his sentence without incident.
Fortunately, Serkis' work paid off as he became part of one of Star Wars' most compelling stories ever told.
