5. The Enemy

Geordi and a Romulan are trapped on a desolate world — the enemy of my enemy is the cave!

Whilst capable of supporting humanoid life for a brief period of time, the harsh environment of Galorndon Core — with its neurodegenerative electromagnetic storms and treacherous landscape — makes Voyager's Parturition 'Planet Hell' look more like Risa. When Geordi falls into a muddy pit on the surface during an away mission, Worf and Riker are forced to leave him behind. There's someone else lurking on the planet, however — Bochra, the Romulan. Naturally, this odd couple ends up in, where else, a set of caves!

Bochra and Geordi must (or, rather, resolve to) work together to escape, and an unlikely camaraderie starts to form. At the same time, on the Enterprise, Worf refuses to donate the ribosomes only he can provide, despite the desperate pleas from Doctor Crusher and Captain Picard, and the intended Romulan recipient dies as a result.

The cave set in The Enemy might well seem familiar to you, and for good reason — it was used as the Tox Uthat digging site in Captain's Holiday, as a cave on Beta Agni II in The Most Toys, and the ominously red-skied Captains' meeting place on Dytallix B in Conspiracy. If that doesn't get Steve Levy's butt bugs all of a fluster, I don't know what will!

Jack Kiely is a writer with a PhD in French and almost certainly an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek.
