Two cave episodes back-to-back? (Well, nearly three, but they were heading out of the caves in Kir'Shara.) Oh, Star Trek, you do spoil us!

Star Trek: Enterprise offered us a different look at the Vulcans than we were used to — ones who had 'strayed from the path' of Surak's original teachings, the record of his writings even assumed to be a 'myth'. These Vulcans were more emotional, more belligerent, and a little less logical, although all this was not without the interference of those who marched beneath the Raptor's Wing.

To 'return' to form, therefore, and in the kind of allegory Plato would probably be proud of, the Vulcans (and Captain Archer) had to go back to the cave. There, they would find the wisdom of Surak that would serve to (re-)enlighten the rest of Vulcan society with T'Pau as minister (and occasional wedding officiant).

The cave goodness didn't start at the T'Karath Sanctuary — the ancient site where the Syrrannites had settled, the catacombs of which played host to the remains of Surak's first Kolinahr masters (and the Kir'Shara, plus the Stone of Gol for the Vulcan Isolationist Movement in the 24th century). The cornucopia of caves actually kicked off with a 'classic' trapped-by-a-storm caper in the Forge.

Jack Kiely is a writer with a PhD in French and almost certainly an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek.
