Patrick Stewart's sublimely titled memoir Making it So came out in October this year, becoming a New York and Sunday Times bestseller. A lot of us had probably got it on pre-order or, failing that, fired up the audiobook so we could listen to the man himself tell it like it was.

If you're looking for 443 pages about Jean-Luc, you're going to be disappointed, but that's rather beside the point. This is an intimate insight into the man behind the character we hold so dear, from his childhood in Yorkshire to the Hollywood walk of fame, and, of course, with plenty of Enterprise anecdotes too — perfect for beneath the tree for any fan.

By the miracle of 23rd and 24th century publishing deals — which sees no money for the ‘author’ but do include a handy time travel clause, it seems — you can also buy the autobiographies of James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Kathryn Janeway, Mr Spock, and most recently Benjamin Sisko (released in November 2023). We'd equally recommend the audiobook version of Janeway's autobiography, read majestically by the Captain/Admiral herself or, to spoil the illusion — like telling a child the truth about Santa but carrying on with Krampus — by Kate Mulgrew, of course. You can buy Picard, Kirk, and Janeway in a bundle, but sadly Jonathan Archer still hasn't written his. Somebody please make a 'long road' joke so I don't have to!

Jack Kiely is a writer with a PhD in French and almost certainly an unhealthy obsession with Star Trek.
