10 Star Trek Characters Who Died Off-Screen

2. Calvin Hudson

Ben Sisko's old academy friend and Starfleet liaison to the Federation colonies on the Cardassian border, Hudson's loyalties to the Federation were pushed beyond their limit.

Turning to the Maquis, the former commander stunned his friend (literally) before heading off into the Badlands to fight the good fight.

Hudson himself would never be seen again onscreen. His fate was revealed in Deep Space Nine's fifth season episode Blaze of Glory. The equally side-switching Michael Eddington tells Sisko that Hudson was killed in action by the Jem'Hadar.

This incident is never seen on screen, and what is little more than a throwaway reference to a character they hadn't seen for three years accidentally becomes a tease for a shadowy return. Stranger things have happened, haven't they, Commander Ro?

If the character were to return, the show would have to recast, as actor Bernie Casey passed away in 2017.

The character had originally been slated for death at the end of The Maquis two-part story. It was originally a much more Hudson-centric story than filmed. In the end, Hudson would live for another day, not least since the opening of the season had seen the arrival, and equally quick demise, of Li Nalas.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
