Star Trek: 10 Things We Now Know About The Breen

Unless they had their eyes closed the whole time, Kira and Dukat must have seen what a Breen looked like in Indiscretion. Kira doubly so, as she reoffended for the uniform in What You Leave Behind. As per Worf, however, in Til Death Do Us Part, no one was supposed to have seen beneath the mask and lived. In The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, Ronald D. Moore gives a practical explanation for this continuity slippage: "It's just one of those things. There's too many details to keep track of." Ira Steven Behr, on the other hand, gave a surprising, more in universe justification:

There's nothing in those helmets. […] Or maybe there's a little slug, some tiny little creature in there. I never wanted them to be humanoid in any way.

Or, we could have gone with first assistant director Lou Race's assessment:

I always figured they must look like Donald Duck. You know — because of the beak.

Thankfully, none of those options made it past the thought process. More to the point, as first face of the Breen, there could have been no better choice than actor Elias Toufexis — both he and Moll co-star Eve Harlow have already brought powerhouse performances this Discovery season. Toufexis' unfettered enthusiasm for, and nerd knowledge of, Star Trek continues to shine through. In an interview with Cinemablend's Mick Joest, Toufexis recalled seeing the concept art for L'ak for the first time:

I said, 'What is he?' And they said, 'Oh, he's, he's gonna be a Breen.' And I was like, 'Breen don't take their helmets off.' That was the first thing I said, that's a much of a nerd I am. […] 'Are you telling me I'm gonna be the first Breen that takes his helmet off?'

Toufexis has made Trek history, and he's just as geekily excited as the rest of us! L'ak level unlocked!
