Star Trek: 10 Things We Now Know About The Breen
5. Breen There, Done That…
… Got the Thot-shirt? After Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and before Star Trek: Discovery, the Breen only appeared twice more on our screens. The first was brief and only in holographic form, as one of the Hirogen creations aboard Iden's little liberation ship in the Star Trek: Voyager two-parter Flesh and Blood.
The crew of the Intrepid-class had, of course, skipped over the Dominion War (in person), only getting their news in a bottle and then later in more official communiqués. The audience probably knew more about the Breen than B'Elanna at that stage. Canon and production time also work in ways as mysterious as the Breen, it seems. Voyager was dispatched to the Delta Quadrant in 2371 in Caretaker, which first aired on 16 January 1995, but we, the viewer, didn't 'meet' the Breen until Indiscretion, which first aired on 23 October 1995 and is set in 2372. That's not continuity-breaking, it just cooks the noggin!
The Breen's second appearance after DS9 was then in the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode Trusted Sources. In that, the crew of the Cerritos beam down to Brekka only to be ambushed by the Breen. In orbit, the Cali-class has to battle three Breen interceptors!
A while before the species' now third post-DS9 appearance, in 2018, Discovery make-up effects department head, Glenn Hetrick, took part in a Facebook Live event with fellow designer Neville Page. In reply to a fan question, Hetrick stated the following:
I want the Breen to eventually be in Discovery too. […] I want to get one of those refrigeration suits off and see what the Breen look like.
It seems they've had Breen on the brain for quite some time!
