Star Trek: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Duras Sisters

4. Those Kostumes

The most striking thing about the sisters' appearance would be their wardrobe.  Across their four TV appearances, the Klingon armour and Klingon Kleavage. as it would be termed in some circles, hardly changed apart from the accent colour. Indeed, that split frontage was apparently a favourite of one Gene Roddenberry according to the Star Trek Costumes book.

It would remain red for Redemption I and II, and change to green for DS9's Past Prologue and TNG's Firstborn. The most noticeable difference between the pair is the collar decoration where Lursa's is marked with symbols and B'Etor's is a slatted diamond.

Diving into Paula M Block and Terry J Erdmann's Star Trek Costumes book further, for Generations the costumes received some upgrades to reflect the move to the big screen. The materials themselves were upgraded with the sleeves receiving a darker green than seen in Firstborn and Past Prologue. The sisters would also receive new shoulder pieces, gauntlets and gorgets (a neckpiece that covers the throat). Lursa's torso covering remained more simplistic with vertical panelling while B'Etor's received increased patterning and wear detail.

Lursa's costume would be reused in the later Voyager episode Prophecy as worn by Peggy Jo Jacobs as Ch'Rega. Encountered by Voyager, Ch'Rega was part of a Klingon crew searching for the saviour of the Empire. She would be "courted" by Neelix, much to the frustration of his roommate at the time, Tuvok.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
