Star Trek: 10 Top Secret Artefacts At Daystrom Station

9. Arretan Androids

There's definitely a certain fascination with androids and synthetic life aboard the Daystrom Station.

Nothing says Original Series more than a set of talking, flashing orbs on a set cleverly reused from The Gamesters of Triskelion but this time we're not here for the balls.

Not content with collecting up the work of Noonien Soong and the Exo III duplicator, those lovely schemers behind Section 31 have also acquired an Arretan android.

Now the name might not immediately bring the episode and incident to mind but the name Sargon might. Featured in The Original Series episode Return to Tomorrow, the android body was a potential host to the last survivors of the Arretan race, Sargon, his wife Thalassa, and their associate Henoch.

Initially, the three would inhabit the bodies of Kirk, Doctor Mulhall (Diana Muldaur), and Spock respectively. While this gave them their first leg stretch in a few thousand years the ultimate plan was for the trio to receive their own android bodies. The problem is that after experiencing life within a biological host the thought of transferring into a synthetic shell is less than enthralling for both Henoch and Thalassa.

Plus the android bodies are nowhere near as advanced and lifelike as Soong would perfect in the following century but it does represent an early attempt at creating mechanical life.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
