Ups & Downs From Star Trek: Infinite

1. DOWN: Lacking Character

Fans might be hoping to pick up tips from Picard, Riker, Sisko, or Janeway along the road on the Infinite adventure but this is definitely more of an overview than an in-depth personal journey. Given the lightning-fast pace at which years and then decades seem to come and go, the familiar faces of the franchise are little more than snapshots and background decoration with little to no effect on the results of player activity. That said it is pretty cool to see Sloan and Necheyev pop up in proceedings to help out your fleets.

When awarded they can be placed into leadership roles but are as easily cast off and replaced as the generic science characters that help man your research and science ships. This is absolutely a case of the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few as players are looking at the whole of the Federation rather than the actions of one ship on a single mission

Perhaps more frustrating still is the tendency of the game to rely on a series of generic character templates that respawn into different races which means at certain points two very similar individuals look like they are heading off against each other.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
