Ups & Downs From Star Trek: Infinite
8. UP: Building The Fleet
Sounds pretty simple in these kinds of terms but building a good fleet and a stable territory are far from straightforward. The fleet options might start out small but with resilience and some research you’ll be flying Excelsior Class ships in no time. Colony ships help provide new places to live, Governor ships help keep those places ticking over and Construction ships build outposts, research bases, and mining facilities.
Those are essential in stabilizing our occupied territory but there’s also a more Trek element as you’ll be needing some ways to defend and explore. Science vessels let you seek out new life beyond your borders and then there’s the more familiar ships from the franchise. Early on your research will develop the Intrepid Class and with each variant comes the ability to upgrade and protect your lands more effectively. Researching technology might introduce the phaser lance 50 years early so watch out.
Choices in research and missions will alter the paths too so one time players might be hoping for that Excelsior Class but end up with the California Class. The game really can be that varied and it's impressive that Paradox Interactive has managed to bring some of the details right up to date and the current era of shows.
Fleets are an empire's security blanket so make sure they're well commanded and stocked up for that next mission.
