10 4th Wall Breaking TV Show Moments Everyone Hated
7. Ed Sheeran's Cameo - Game Of Thrones
On paper this shouldn't really be an instance of breaking the fourth wall, yet the end result is so aggressively immersion-breaking that it basically is regardless.
In Game of Thrones' season seven premiere, musician Ed Sheeran has a cameo as a musically inclined Lannister guard who sings a song that attracts the attention of Arya Stark (Maisie Williams).
Though there's nothing particularly wrong with Sheeran's performance, seeing such a famous celebrity show up in a Game of Thrones episode is ridiculous, all the more so as Sheeran actually plays a Lannister guard with the voice of an angel.
The cameo received a huge backlash from Thrones fans, who found it distracting and out-of-place in the gritty fantasy series, enough that Sheeran temporarily deleted his Twitter account following its airing and later stated that the response "muddied" the joy he got from appearing on the show.
It probably would've made more sense to have Sheeran play a character whose face is disguised, or in the very least not draw direct attention to his presence with close-ups.
