10 Doctor Who Spinoffs Fans Want In The Whoniverse

After 27 years, is Doctor Who’s most requested spinoff finally on the horizon?

Doctor Who’s expanded universe has been around for almost as long as the show itself. In the '60s alone there were novelisations, annuals, comic-strips, a stage play, and even feature films.

Yet the show has only been accompanied by TV spinoffs for a fraction of its 60 years on air. There was 1981’s aborted pilot K9 and Company, the golden period between 2006 and 2011 when (almost) every year brought a new series of The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, and 2016’s short-lived Class.

In other words, TV spinoffs have been the exception rather than the norm. But the tide is slowly turning.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies – the man who masterminded the first “great and bountiful” Doctor Who empire – has promised more content than ever before, and a shared universe to match those of Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek. The Whoniverse is here, and the possibilities are endless.

Many Doctors, companions, and other characters are crying out for their own shows, and while RTD is keeping his spinoff plans under wraps for now, some of our suggestions will hopefully make it to the screen!

10. The Master Adventures

The Master has been a Doctor Who mainstay since 1971 and has appeared alongside almost every Doctor in that time.

Played masterfully by Sacha Dhawan, the latest incarnation (who isn't trapped inside a gold tooth, that is) underwent something of an identity crisis upon learning the Doctor was the progenitor for the whole Time Lord race. He even managed to forcibly regenerate her into him. For a brief moment, the Master was the Doctor.

Were the Master or Missy to have their own show, they would no longer need to play second fiddle to their bestest enemy: they could be the main character for a whole series rather than for 25 minutes.

It would also be a chance to plug the gaps in the Master’s (admittedly rather confusing) timeline. We could have a series based around Missy, charting her descent back to evil following The Doctor Falls. It could even end with her regeneration, setting the stage for a second series with Sacha Dhawan.

Having a more morally dubious character lead a spinoff would be a refreshing change. And given how many actors have played the part, the possibilities really are endless!
