7. Australian Appeases West Indians With Chicken
Context is everything. In this advert for Kentucky Fried Chicken, we see a lone white man in a crowd of black people who are enthusiastically dancing and playing various percussion instruments. His head is in his hands and he declares that the situation is, "awkward." We all can relate right? If you're white, anyway. Who hasn't been in a sea of black people and felt there's just no way to properly function? Wait, what? Anyway, the man's solution is to offer them all a big bucket of fried chicken. He relaxes and declares, "too easy." Totally. Time to take a deep breath. You've found the common ground. Black people love fried chicken, right? Wait, what? Yikes. Not so racist though when you consider that, at the time, Australia were playing the West Indies in the cricket and KFC were sponsoring. You can see their thought process. It seems natural for a crowd member to feel uncomfortable sitting with the opposing team's fans. Kinda... Maybe the advertisers are the least racist of all of us, being as they are seemingly oblivious to racial minefield they've skipped into.
